For Jane Kavanagh, a 17-year-old swimmer from Westfield, New Jersey, that 1.98-second margin represents the central challenge she must overcome before joining the University of Notre Dame swimming team in fall 2027. Kavanagh has committed to Notre Dame as part of the class of 2031. She trains at Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA and has already reached Junior National qualifying standards. Her most notable result came at YMCA Short Course Nationals, where she finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.86. She also placed fourth in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley with times of 1:58.36 and 2:02.89. In the 100-yard freestyle, she reached the top 10 with 50.44. Her results make her look like a versatile swimmer, but in the context of Notre Dame’s own Atlantic Coast Conference, the picture is more nuanced. Notre Dame’s women’s team finished 11th of 15 at the 2026 ACC Championships with 366 points. The ACC qualifying standard for the 200-yard freestyle finals is around 1:46.88, meaning Kavanagh’s best time of 1:48.86 leaves her 1.98 seconds short of the scoring threshold. That is not an impossible gap in theory, but it requires synchronized development in technique, endurance, and race strategy. She still has two high school seasons ahead of her. Meanwhile, at Summer Juniors, Kavanagh placed 102nd in the 200-meter backstroke and 130th in the 100-meter freestyle, showing a large discrepancy between her short-course YMCA success and her long-course national-level results. Notre Dame is not expecting her to score immediately. Instead, the coaching staff is investing in her long-term growth. Kavanagh is part of a wider recruiting strategy, as the team looks to develop depth for the 2027-2031 cycle. The true question is whether she can translate training data into ACC-level competition over the next two years. Data never lies, but it knows how to hide itself.
